The publication traces the persistence of Gothic themes and motives in art through a close reading of three narratives imagined on the shores of Lake Geneva during the summer of 1816 by Mary Shelley, John Polidori, and Lord Byron, which marked the beginnings of a modern gothic fiction that continues to influence and resonate today.
With a rich selection of illustrations—375 in color—spanning the centuries from the eighteenth to the twenty-first, and a wide-ranging series of essays by contemporary writers and critics, the catalog offers a perspective on this artistic and literary genre, and shines a light on the dark side of humanity.
Thanks to a pocket-size format, this 480-page exhibition catalog is very practical to consult and share.
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at Musée Rath, Geneva, from December 2, 2016, to March 19, 2017.
