InclassablesVisual, sound & digital arts

 - Inclassables
A collective exploration of the murky area where practices from sound art, visual arts, performance, digital technologies, science, but also poetry and philosophy intersect in a constantly evolving digital environment, drawing on the cross-disciplinary dynamics and experiments initiated by the international festival ]interstice[ in Caen.
Since 2006, in the city of Caen in Normandy, the ]interstice[, rencontre des inclassables festival has explored a creative nexus of intersecting practices from the sound, visual, performance and digital arts, which draw from poetry, philosophy and science. This desire to break down barriers between disciplines and promote porosity is a hallmark of the festival, as is its ambition to cater to all types of audiences, at both cultural venues and historical landmarks.
This book abides by the same open, non-hierarchical philosophy. Rather than chronicle the entire history of the event or offer a retrospective, the wide-ranging contributions presented here—interviews, analyses, profiles of artists and their work, personal experiences, and more—provide a unique, multidimensional set of perspectives on a local experiment that has grown to become an international gathering for hybrid art forms. The story of ]interstice[ also raises larger questions about the artistic, economic, political and environmental issues facing the contemporary art world: How has the transition from analog to digital manifested itself in art? What new aesthetics have emerged? Can an ecosystem for artistic creation in digital environments remain viable over the long term? What resources are needed toproduce hybrid forms? How should these works be distributed? What place does artwork occupy in the technological world? How does art probe the ideological underpinnings of technology? Are works that combine the arts and sciences the best suited to reflect our changing world?
Like the ]interstice[ festival, Inclassables surveys an area of contemporary art history that defies conventional categories and remains largely undocumented in France.
