A monograph, 2007-2026 A monograph, 2007-2026 Benoît Piéron - A monograph, 2007-2026
Designed in collaboration with the artist, this monograph provides a comprehensive overview of Benoît Piéron’s work from the late 2000s to the present, including his most recent exhibitions and projects. It draws on largely unpublished imagery that reflects the intellectual and emotional development of his community-based practice, and includes several essays and an interview.
Benoît Piéron, une monographie, 2007–2026 is the first monograph devoted to the French artist Benoît Piéron. It brings together nearly twenty years of work deeply shaped by his experience of illness and the hospital, whose representations he gently, humorously, and subversively reconfigures.
Marked since childhood by what he calls his "companion illnesses," Benoît Piéron has made the medical world a material for his artistic practice. Waiting, hospital spaces, medical objects, disabled bodies, and the particular temporalities of illness run throughout his work. Far from offering a heroic vision of the fight against illness, he transforms this world, shifting it toward the intimate, the dreamlike, and desire. Repurposed hospital sheets, patchworks, IV stands, hospital beds, sewn objects, plants, wallpaper, sculptures, installations, and films come together to form a world in which the gestures of care meet those of creative crafts, gardening, and DIY culture.
Benoît Piéron himself describes the book as a first "unreasonable monograph." Rather than adopting a chronological and documentary structure, the book displaces traditional codes and hierarchies. It opens and closes with texts printed on colored offset paper; the title and preliminary pages do not appear until some thirty pages later. These are followed by "lifestyle" photographs of the artist, portraits, a catalogue of works, and exhibition views.
The book's material design extends this (de)construction: colored offset papers for the texts, glossy paper for studio photographs, portraits, and exhibition views, and semi-matte paper for the works. The graphic design is not conceived as an illustration of Benoît Piéron's work, but rather as a graphic and sensorial approach developed in close dialogue with his artistic practice.
The publication brings together texts by Marc Donnadieu, Léon Kruijswijk, Rose Vidal, and Salomé Burstein.
Benoît Piéron (born 1983 in Ivry-sur-Seine, France) works on the creation of moments, installations, and objects exploring the sensuality of plants, the boundaries of the human body, and the temporal nature of waiting rooms. His creative journey encompasses various practices, including patchwork, existential gardening, and wallpaper design.
Having a long-term disease, Benoît Piéron has a very close relationship with the hospital ecosystem. He has developed a practice that not only draws inspiration from this environment but seeks to give plasticity to disease. To do this, Benoît Piéron uses as raw material used hospital sheets from different hospital departments. Far from the romantic heroism of the usual metaphors for malady, Piéron places himself in a joyous gray zone. Through his art, he endeavors to explore these uncharted territories, viewing it not as a burden but as a potential source of creative expression.
Central to Piéron's practice are contemplations on the experience of waiting and the complex interplay between health and illness. His work delves into the subtle boundaries that exist between presence and absence, the interior and exterior, the human body and the architectural structures that surround it, and the temporal aspects of medical institutions that mold the patient experience.
