Ghanaian artist and preacher Kwame Akoto (born 1950 in Kumasi), better known as Almighty God, has developed a pictorial practice alongside his occupation as a sign painter since the early 1970s. This prolific body of work combines spiritual messages, self-portraits, portraits of celebrities, and scenes of everyday life in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, where he is based. With a masterful command of typography and a precise sense of language and imagery, the artist gives thanks to "Almighty" God for his blessings—particularly humanity, nature, and food—and preaches against demonic temptations such as witchcraft, paganism, and even cigarettes, deemed public enemy number one.
