Phil Maggi's
twentieth album is a body of work five years in the
making, conceived between 2019 and 2024 across
a period that moved through pandemic stillness and
intense creative immersion: paintings, drawings, and
deep readings in Islamic Iranian spirituality (particularly
the illuminationist philosophy of Sohrawardi and
Imaginal concept conceived by Henry Corbin), pursued
at home and across a handful of studios—La Rouille (Liège), Koko-Studios (Sprimont), Le Laboratoire
Central (Brussels), and his own Iva Bedlam Studios.
The music is mixing all sort of assorted sounds which are
familiar to the world of the composer (ambient-atmospheric, soundscapes and free-jazz with a touch of concrete music).
Into this singular space, Maggi invited a circle of collaborators
and kindred spirits—
Catherine Graindorge, Roxane Leuridan (Ensemble Hopper), Pavel Tchikov (
Ogives,
Sopa Boba),
Zoé Pireaux, Marie Billy (
Ogiv
es), Pascal Di Pinto, Gabriel Marguerie, and HP Desrosiers (Zääär)—each bringing their
own distinct voice and artistry to the work.
Phil Maggi (born 1980 in Liège, where he lives and works) is a composer, a vocalist and a filmmaker from Belgium. Known as the lead singer of
heavy-rock combo
Ultraphallus, Phil Maggi develops an extensive body of work as a solo musician for several years. Since 2003, he's working on disfigured sonic landscapes including atmospheric ambient music and the exploration of drone and noise territories, but also
dark psychedelic and lo-fi cinematographic soundtracks inspired by dreams and
traditional popular music.
