Erik Verhagen brings together seven artists from both sides of the Atlantic, who offer their perspectives on François Morellet's work, bearing witness to the enduring vitality of his legacy.
Erik Verhagen is a Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Lille, an art critic, and independent curator. He has published numerous essays, and articles on art from the '60s to the present day. In charge of the catalogue raisonné of François Morellet's works, he has also contributed to several publications on Morellet (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2011; Dia Art Foundation, New York, 2019; Centre Pompidou-Metz, 2026).
François Morellet (1926–2016), a self-taught artist, was one of the leading figures of postwar geometric abstraction and a pioneer of minimal art. His paintings, sculptures, and installations are grounded in rules, systems, and constraints, stripped of overt expressiveness while still allowing room for chance, and infused with a distinctive sense of humor.
