The Contemporary ConditionIntroductory Thoughts on Contemporaneity and Contemporary Art

Geoff Cox, Jacob Lund - The Contemporary Condition
Introductory book to the “Contemporary Condition” series, which brings out some of the key issues relating to contemporaneity as a defining condition of our historical present—and vows to rethink the deep structures of temporalization as we know it.
This book is the first volume of “The Contemporary Condition” series, edited by Geoff Cox and Jacob Lund and published with Aarhus University, and ARoS Art Museum (Denmark). The aim of the series is to question the formation of subjectivity and concept of temporality in the world now. It begins from the assumption that art, with its ability to investigate the present and make meaning from it, can lead to an understanding of wider developments within culture and society. Addressing a perceived gap in existing literature on the subject, the series focuses on three broad strands: the issue of temporality, the role of contemporary media and computational technologies, and how artistic practice makes epistemic claims.
Geoff Cox is Associate Professor in the Department of Aesthetics and Communication, and Participatory IT Research Centre, Aarhus University (Denmark), and Adjunct faculty member at the Transart Institute (Denmark & USA). He is also an occasional artist/curator, as part of the self-institution Museum of Ordure. He is an editor for the “DATA Browser” book series (published by Autonomedia), and co-edited Economising Culture (2004), Engineering Culture (2005), Creating Insecurity (2009) and Disrupting Business (2013). He co-runs a yearly workshop/conference in collaboration with transmediale and is co-editor of the associated open access online journal APRJA. With Alex McLean, he wrote Speaking Code: coding as aesthetic and political expression (MIT Press 2013).
