Dick the Stick first appeared in Diego Marcon's animated film Interlude (introducing Dick the Stick). The short cartoon, loosely based on a recollection used by Georges Perec as a preface to “Espèces d'espaces,” takes place over three acts, featuring a stick orderly—Dick—intent on polishing a boot. A script for Dick is a collection of 38 short, self-contained episodes, each with Dick the Stick as the main character.

In 2018, Marcon won the Foundation Hernaux Sculpture Award and the MAXXI Bulgari Prize 2018.
