Faire – To look at things #55 – The Billboard Image: In, Around, and About

Faire – To look at things - Faire – To look at things #55
A reflection on what becomes of and what is produced by images displayed in public spaces.
Billboards are urban devices with significant potential for exploring the mechanisms that shape our perception of photographs in everyday life. As "contemporary visual monuments" accessible to all, they foster open discussions about the everyday imagery that permeates that permeates our field of vision in public spaces. Drawing from an awareness of photography's essential role in defining both personal identity and social belonging, this publication explores various practices: the rise of billboards as soughtafter advertising spaces, the work of historical and contemporary artists who engage with them as sites of reflection, and cultural initiatives that transform them into a democratic exhibition format.
In an era dominated by online image consumption, "The Billboard Image: In, Around, and About" emphasizes the importance of bringing the focus back to the experience in physical space and cultivating consciousness of the photographs we passively encounter in the public realm—the place where opinions, value systems, power dynamics, and civic consciousness take shape. As public spaces become more fragmented by privatization, gentrification, and individualism, understanding the role of billboards in transforming urban space and, crucially, our collective imagination, is an essential step in reclaiming the spaces we inhabit.
Faire is a bi-monthly magazine dedicated to graphic design, published from October to June, distributed issue by issue or in the form of anthologies of three or four issues. Created by Empire, Syndicat studio's publishing house, Faire is aimed for undergraduate students as well as researchers and professionals, documenting contemporary and international practices of graphic design, along with the history and grammar of styles. Each issue focuses on a single subject, addressed by a renowned author.

"Critical publications dedicated to the analysis of Graphic design are sadly few and far between today, particularly in France, but also in Europe as a whole. Adopting an analytical and critical posture with regard to the forms and activities of Graphic design, Sacha Léopold and François Havegeer intend to establish a printed publication that deals with these practices. The publication will work with seven authors in its first year (Lise Brosseau, Manon Bruet, Thierry Chancogne, Céline Chazalviel, Jérôme Dupeyrat, Catherine Guiral and Étienne Hervy). This initially limited choice, linked to a desire to propose an experience with a group that has previously participated together in projects, will then allow for the inclusion of foreign authors in the second year of publication."
