Dear Omer is a work in book form conceived and produced on the occasion of Selma Selman's first institutional exhibition in Italy, 1000 Tears at GAMeC Bergamo, part of the program Pedagogy of Hope. The book brings together a series of letters written by the artist over the years to Omer, an unidentified figure with whom she maintains an evolving relationship marked by love, conflict, intimacy, and distance. An afterword by Aleksandar Hemon (the book's line editor) concludes the collection, offering further insights through a collection of thoughts, ideas, and poetic images closely tied to Selma Selman's artistic practice.
Selma Selman (born in 1991 in Bihać, Bosnia and Herzegovina) has built much of her research around the history of her family and community. Her practice investigates systems of power and the ways in which they shape value, visibility, memory, and belonging. Moving across painting, film, performance, and research-based forms, she examines how social, economic, political, and cultural structures determine whose bodies, histories, labor, and experiences are recognized, represented, or erased.
