The donation by Elisabeth and Alain Clément of a group of paintings, sculptures, and gouaches on paper enriched, in 2024, a body of work already held in the collection of the Carré d'Art – Musée d'art contemporain de Nîmes, creating a journey through the artist's work.

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1941, Alain Clément chose the south of France as his adopted home. In 1969, together with Tjeerd Alkema, Jean Azémard, and Vincent Bioulès, he founded the ABC Productions group. Closely associated with avant-garde movements such as Supports/Surfaces, he took part in the theoretical debate challenging established notions of painting, but soon moved away from formal rigour to give free rein to a form of expressionism. The artist has developed an extensive body of abstract work, situated between an exploration of composition, the sensuality of gesture, and the intensity of colour. His paintings, sculptures, and prints combine visual pleasure with structural force. The body is present both as a subject and through the physical relationship that the painter and the viewer establish with the space of the canvas. Painting extends beyond its frame to engage with architecture.
