French composer and ethnomusicologist Jean Schwarz (born 1939 in Lille), a historic figure of the
GRM, engineer at the CNRS, member of the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, and teacher of electroacoustics at the Gennevilliers Conservatory, has left his mark on the world of electronic and experimental music. Creator of highly original electronic, electroacoustic, and tape works inspired by a wide range of musical traditions and imbued with a deep love for jazz (he has collaborated with
Don Cherry), he has composed for dance, film, and the performing arts, working with artists such as Carolyn Carlson,
Maguy Marin,
Jean-Luc Godard, and Alain Resnais.
