Step by StepVisions of an Art Dealer's Collection

 - Step by Step
A journey through Western artistic culture with thirty-nine ancient and contemporary works from the Fabrizio Moretti collection, from the Gothic period to the experiments of the last ten years, passing through Mannerism and the Baroque.
Published on the occasion of Step by Step – Un regard sur la collection d'un marchand d'art, the exhibition curated in 2019 by Cristiano Raimondi for the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco and featuring Fabrizio Moretti's private—and curious—collection, this publication is the result of a remarkable collaboration between the NMNM and the Italian collector. Avoiding any kind of scholarly approaches, the book reveals new and unexpected similarities and comparisons between works of art as far ago as the fourteenth century and those from the present day. Focusing on the intrinsic beauty of their nature as objects, and following a non-linear sequencing that allows past and present to question one another, Step by Step aims to tell not just the story of how these works were created, but also to reveal the personal and spiritual cosmogony of their collector.

“The knowledge that Moretti has of the past is profound but unnatural. His relationship with contemporary works of art is direct. His collection reveals in a fascinating way the inner conflict of a collector who wants to make a schizophrenia of taste part of his identity. In Fabrizio Moretti, the Dr Jekyll of old art and the Mr Hyde of contemporary art coexist.”—Francesco Bonami
