The Curatorial Work – Chronology of Curated Shows and Collections

Marcel Duchamp - The Curatorial Work
Duchamp as curator.
They are the stuff of legend, in words and in pictures: Marcel Duchamp's disguises and countless photographic self-stagings, his ironic, sarcastic, humorous comments on art, the art world, art criticism and art history. Less well known is that other Marcel Duchamp who, empathetically and strategically alert, championed the artists of his own contemporary cultural milieu: as a curator of exhibitions between the 1910s and his death in 1968, as a juror and adviser to some of the most important collections, museums and galleries of modern art. The volume outlines around seventy exhibitions and, supplemented by the most recent research findings, presents Duchamp's cooperation with a good many of the protagonists of the period: Louise and Walter Conrad Arensberg, Katherine S. Dreier, Francis Picabia, Sidney and Harriet Janis, André Breton, Julien Levy, and Peggy Guggenheim.
