For over 20 years, the author kept in a drawer the little pieces of paper on which he noted things to do. They found their place there once these "things to do" were done; noting them helped him see what still remained to be done, and to not forget anything. In either case, these words that reminded him of what he had to do disappeared under the ink that blackened them. "Mesmots" thus constitutes the erased archives of a life, that of a researcher and editor. Taken out of the drawer to transform these traces into art, these memos have been organized according to the principle "as things go by", in order to make them all visible and as best as possible. "Mesmots" carry the archives of this life in two different ways. Each of the 400 copies of the book reproduces all 120 cards, but 120 copies of the print run carry one of the 120 initial archive cards. The distribution disperses not only the print run, but also the archives, around the world.
Professor of Philosophy of Art at Rennes 2 University, Leszek Brogowski (born in 1955 in Gdańsk) is the founder of
Éditions Incertain Sens (2000) and the Cabinet du livre d'artiste (2006). From 2015 to 2023, he served as Vice-President for Research, Science-Society Relations, and Culture at his university. He published several books and almost 150 articles. Retired since 2024, he has reinvested his artistic activities, which he had suspended for 40 years.
