A polyphonic narrative set in France's post-colonial era, Affreville recounts family memories, as well as the shadowy corners of official history and the silence of survivors, in order to lift the veil of silence under which the Algerian war was kept.

Claire Tencin retraces the tumultuous life of Alexandrine de Tencin (1682-1749), a libertine and libertarian woman of letters, at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment, in a mirror-image dialogue with her character.
