Transatlantique

Shirley Jaffe - Transatlantique
At the invitation of Frédéric Paul, nine artists from both sides of the Atlantic cast an eye on the work of American abstract painter Shirley Jaffe.
Frédéric Paul was born in 1959. Curator of the contemporary collections of the Centre Pompidou, he is curator of the retrospective exhibition of Shirley Jaffe travelling from 2022 to 2023 from the Centre Pompidou to the Kunstmuseum in Basel and the Musée Matisse in Nice.
A French resident since 1949, Shirley Jaffe (1923-2016) belongs to the second generation of abstract expressionism. A stay in Berlin in the early 1960s marked her move away from gestural painting. From then on her work invested a rich repertoire of colored abstract forms, fueled by the visual complexity of the urban.
Edited by Frédéric Paul.
Texts by Polly Apfelbaum, Pierre Buraglio, Alain Clément, Shirley Kaneda, Robert Kushner, Marielle Paul, Hugo Pernet, Bernard Piffaretti, Fiona Rae.

Graphic design: Catherine Barluet and Jean François Maurige.
