DanseAn Anthology

Danse - Danse
An anthology of key writings on choreography across the French, U.S., and international dance scenes since the turn of the century.
Danse – An Anthology traces the ways in which contemporary dance has become a site for vital experiments on questions of the body, identity, belonging, knowledge economies, and globalization. This dynamic and wide-ranging collection maps the numerous exchanges between Francophone and Anglophone performance cultures and critical thought. Many of the texts included in this volume are translated into English for the first time.
Danse is a multifaceted initiative organized by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York exploring contemporary dance through performances, talks and critical writing. In conjunction with Danse – A French-American Festival of Performance and Ideas, New York, May 1-18, 2014, with 17 companies from France, two publications are produced, Danse – An Anthology and Danse – A Catalogue.
The book is part of the New York series, created conjunctively by Les presses du réel and the French Cultural Services in New York to publish theoretical texts in English not only on contemporary art but also on dance, and on emerging American performance that is more in line with French thinking. The series is inspired by a simple assumption: that contemporary culture is a public good that offers perspective on the questions of our time. Today, contemporary art is increasingly merchandised and yet undervalued in its capacity to give new perspective on the globalized world in which we live. Keeping up with international debates, this series attempts to support that budding perspective.

Published in conjunction with Danse: A French-American Festival of Performance and Ideas, presented in New York from May 1st to May 18, 2014.
