Michel Ragon

Writer, poet, activist, polemicist, essayist, novelist, art and architecture critic, historian of proletarian literature and anarchism, Michel Ragon (1924–2020), a tireless explorer of creativity in all its forms, set out to "bring coherence to a rich body of work ranging from the writers of the people to avant-garde art, from earthy roots to architectural utopia." For him, architecture was the quintessential arena for social engagement, allowing him to explore alternative ways of conceiving the built environment and to propose new modes of existence.

Prospective et futurologie, published in 1978 and republished here for the first time, is the first—and still unrivaled—overview of the experimental architectural movements of the 1960s and 1970s: through a reflection on alternative ways of living, Michel Ragon raises the question—more relevant than ever—of how architecture can adapt to the transformations of industrial society in the face of technological advances.
