Bombastic Views! Anyone who wants to paint needs paint – it could be as simple as that. Julia Gruner, who graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2015 as a master student of Katharina Grosse, relies in her "Domestic Paintings" on a different palette: on Bilou Duschgel Sweet Galaxy, Dontodent Mundspülung Junior Lerneffekt, Dresdner Essenz Badekonzentrat Ruhe Pur, got2b Haargel Kleber wasserfest, Rewe Beste Wahl Creme mit Aceto Balsamico di Modena IPG, Rewe Bio Steirisches Kürbiskernöl and treaclemoon Cremedusche one ginger morning. This produces texture, is smeared, squeezed one layer over another and reacts chemically. The artist spreads it all out on a scanner on a sheet of cling film, so that a few folds are sometimes part of the picture. The effects lie somewhere between bombastic views, interstellar spaces and childlike-looking daubing. Put differently, the ephemeral images held fast in the scan awaken our curiosity about the industrially manufactured products we handle every day, products that are moreover perfectly tailored to every situation in life and about whose ingredients and manufacturing process we in fact know very little. The "Kienbaum Artists' Books" are the ideal place for such experiments, and so the publication consists of four elements: a poster folded to form the cover, which reproduces the scan of one work in full, and three booklets—in the first Julia Gruner shows details of several works, in the second she lists the product information in full, and in a third booklet the colourings used in the foodstuffs and their properties are recorded in detail.
In her artistic work, Julia Gruner (born 1984 in Lüdenscheid) explores the boundaries of the medium of painting. An important part of her work is the experimental exploration of the material paint—as one of the central elements of painting—in its chemical, physical and material-aesthetic properties. For example, she uses paint as a material to create three-dimensional works, examines paint particles left over from the painting process under the microscope, or experiments with scanning colorful liquids. In the process, ideas from science, art history or perception theory influence the work as well as things from everyday life. In presentations of the works, the relationship to the surrounding space and the other artworks also plays an important role. Many works are created specifically for a certain exhibition situation. Since 2015, Julia Gruner has been working regularly with artist Liza Dieckwisch as artist duo "Artist Mukbang" on joint, often participatory projects that include colorful food as a central element. Since 2019, the two have been running the YouTube channel Artist Mukbang.
