les presses du réel
This extensive monographic publication offers a comprehensive examination of Rómulo Macció's painting, situating his work within the development of modern and contemporary Latin American art.
Through a rigorous visual and critical approach, the book traces the evolution of his pictorial language—from gestural abstraction to expressive figuration, Pop Art, Transavanguardia, and figurative landscapes. Bringing together high-quality reproductions, newly commissioned essays by María Gainza and Mercedes Casanegra, and republished interviews with the artist as archival material, the volume addresses scholars, curators, collectors, and readers interested in painting, modernity, and the cultural context of Latin American art from the 1950s to the early 2000s.
Rómulo Macció (1931-2016) was a key figure in Argentine and Latin American modern art and a founding member of the influential Nueva Figuración movement. He played a central role in redefining painting in the 1960s through a dynamic fusion of abstraction, figuration, and Latin American Pop Art strategies, engaging critically with urban life, mass culture, and political imagery.
