Square Root

Sara Bichão - Square Root
A retrospective of drawings, sculptures, installations, and performances by the Portuguese artist, with five essays.
Raiz quadrada / Square Root stems from a dialogue held over the course of around fifteen years with the artist Sara Bichão. This book is the culmination stage of a research dedicated to the artist, partially presented in the eponymous exhibition dedicated to her in Appleton (Lisbon) from December 2024 to January 2025, curated by Luísa Especial. It seeks to shed light on the artist's gestures and forms, freely echoing in drawing, sculpture, installations and performances throughout time. Assembling materials from different provenances, Sara Bichão's creations are often embodied and inhabited by personal or fictional stories.
This publication includes five original texts, commissioned for this purpose and written by curators Luísa Especial, Noëlig Le Roux, Joana P. R. Neves, Delfim Sardo, and by the artist Rui Chafes. Instigated by AiR 351, this large project prompted the mobilisation of a series of interlocutors and partners who helped to expand it on various fronts, mainly in Portugal and also in France, where her work has been harbored for the last decade.
Sara Bichão was born in 1986 in Lisbon, where she lives and works. Consisting of assemblages of materials, some gleaned, others given or stolen, Sara Bichão's creations are embodied and inhabited by personal or fictional stories. Her work has been exhibited in Portugal, France, the United States, and Italy.
