Binta Diaw - Toolu Xeer
First monograph devoted to the work of the Italian-Senegalese artist Binta Diaw.
This book is divided into three parts, each devoted to a body of work by the artist (installation or solo exhibition). Following a preface by Marie-Hélène Pereira, the first part deals with the work Dïàspora (2021), accompanied by a text by Françoise Vergès. The second focuses on the works presented at his solo exhibition Toolu Xeer [Field of Stones] at the Galerie Cécile Fakhoury in Dakar in 2022, with a text by Delphine Lopez. Finally, the book presents Binta Diaw's installation Chorus of Soil, presented in 2023 at the Liverpool Biennial, in an interview with Janine Gaëlle Dieudji.
Binta Diaw is an Italian-Senegalese artist born in Milan in 1995. She lives and works between Milan and Dakar. Binta Diaw is a graduate of the Accademia di belle arti di Brera di Milano in Milan, and the École d'Art et de Design de Grenoble in France. Binta Diaw's visual research takes shape at the confluence of philosophical and historical reflections on the social phenomena that define our contemporary world, such as migration, the notion of belonging, the relationship with history and its archives, and the question of gender. Her work is often conceived in the form of installations and site-specific projects that can take on a monumental dimensions.
