Tiane Doan na Champassak - Indo-Chine
The photographic works of the artist Tiane Doan na Champassak's grandmother, Alsatian married to a Vietnamese in Baden Baden in 1913.
Born into an illustrious Annamite family, an attorney and a writer, Doan Vinh Thuan met in Baden Baden Mathilde Hossenlopp, who was born in Alsace. It was mutual love at first sight. Married against all odds in 1913, the couple moved to Indochina. Mathilde then discovered photography, leaving behind an important collection of glass plates taken between 1915 and 1929. As a form of tribute wished by their grandson Tiane Doan na Champassak, Mathilde's work is now gathered together with a selection of texts written by her husband in 1909 and 1913.
Tiane Doan na Champassak (born 1973) is a French visual artist of Asian origin. He has developed a complex body of work infusing his own photographic production with techniques of appropriation, variation, reuse and repetition. Champassak subjects materials from the internet, personal memorabilia, vernacular photography and magazine cuttings to a large variety of processes linked to the conceptual arsenal of postmodernism, challenging themes such as sexuality, gender identity and censorship.
Photographs by Mathilde Hossenlopp.
Texts by Doan Vinh Thuan.
