Andrea De Fusco captures, through Polaroid photographs, the boat crossings from Naples to the Aeolian Islands, as the seasons and years go by.
Anyone who has travelled to the Aeolian Islands from Naples by boat retains a vivid, almost cinematic memory of that journey: the sun sets, seagulls chase the wake, darkness falls and all sense of direction is lost until one is simply 'on board'. Finally, at dawn, the outside world slowly reappears: the silhouettes of Stromboli and the other Aeolian Islands emerge from the blue.
Andrea De Fusco depicts this route not as a mere journey but as a ritual, a passage between two dimensions. His Polaroids, taken during different crossings, seasons and years, have lost their true chronological order: rearranged to follow the ship's route, to the point of creating the illusion of a single journey, they are explored in their physicality, sometimes enlarged to the point of losing the subject and dissolving into an abstract landscape. The images are interwoven with texts by Giacomo De Fusco, reflections that question what remains of space and time when all points of reference disappear: on board, between one port and another, the ship is a world unto itself.
Andrea De Fusco (born in 1990 in Roma) is a film director and visual artist. He has made documentaries, essay films and experimental works, exploring a range of formats and media. His works include In Aquis Fundata, Shambala and Night Song of a Wandering Cowboy. His projects have been presented at international exhibitions, festivals and platforms.
