Fidback #02

Issue 2 of Fidback, the film journal edited by the FIDMarseille festival, with a a look back at the 36th edition of the festival, a focus on films that made waves on the global cinema scene in 2025, a carte blanche granted by the Cnap to the FID to select a work from the Cnap's 2025 acquisitions (The Watchman by Ali Cherri), and a portrait of the Chilean filmmaking duo Carolina Adriazola and José Luis Sepúlveda.
A look back at seven films from the FID Official Selection through the eyes of French and international writers and critics. The critical essays are accompanied by interviews, documents, and previously unpublished materials. From Fantaisie, the debut feature by French filmmaker Isabel Pagliai, to Cartas a mis padres muertos by Chilean master Ignacio Agüero, this selection of films offers a concentrated glimpse of the 2025 edition of the festival—a handful of titles among the many that deserved a closer look.
Echoing the previous edition of the festival, Laura Vazquez contributes two poems inspired by two films presented at FID 2024, extending the experience of cinema into poetry.
The choice of the eight films on which we invited writers and critics to cast their gaze is, once again, a critical gesture in itself. From Jean-Luc Godard to Paul Thomas Anderson, from Radu Jude to Kleber Mendonça Filho, from Šarūnas Bartas to Shinji Sōmai, this selection sketches less a panorama of current cinema than a constellation of films whose formal and political force seemed to us to deserve the longer perspective afforded by the journal.
As part of the carte blanche granted by the Cnap to FID, the festival selected The Watchman by Ali Cherri from the Cnap's 2025 acquisitions and invited Philippe Mangeot to contribute a text on the work.
Héctor Oyarzún contributes the Portrait of Chilean filmmakers Carolina Adriazola and José Luis Sepúlveda, tracing the coherence of a body of work that is both fiercely independent and deeply rooted in the social and political realities of their country.
