A piece for specially tuned pianos that operates in the negative, by subtracting from the instrument's full harmonic range.
Each of the piano strings is tuned and harmonized so as to have a linear distribution of frequencies. Thus, when musicians play all or part of the keyboard at the same time, a “noisy” sound is heard. This device therefore calls for harmonically rich music. Composition is done by subtraction, by removing material. It is music in negative, where the missing notes become as important as those that are played.
