Queer art / Gender studies

Based on an exhibition and conferences that took place in 2012 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, this volume expands on the issues raised by queer art practices through interviews, essays, collages, as well as personal and academic texts.

The publication brings together extensive material from Hamlet, mise-en-scène, an homage to Jack Smith presented at Portikus in 2012, along with recently restored and never-published stills, drawings, and writings by the American filmmaker related to his film Hamlet in the Rented World (A Fragment) (1970-73).

The series of drawings from “Le lac sombre” (“The Dark Lake”) were inspired by an episode from La Peste Brune (The Brown Plague), a written account of Germany in the Thirties by french writer, theorist and activist Daniel Guérin. There he described his encounter with the Wild Boys, a group from the “Wandervögel” movement, a libertarian youth community which crossed Germany and its history from 1896 to 1936.
