The Share of Sand

Ramsès Younan - The Share of Sand
The first official monograph project around Ramsès Younan, a major figure and member of the Egyptian surrealists group, this volume gathers an exhaustive catalogue of Younan's paintings, drawings and visual experimentations with an anthology of critical essays about and by the artist.
These texts also reveal to us a multi-faceted Younan as philosopher, art critic, translator and above all a catalyst for the global cultural revolution, emerging from the ruins of fascisms and former colonial empires. Retracing intellectual trajectories between France and Egypt, this book revive past and present voices (Georges Henein, Aimé Azar, Abdul Kader el-Janabi), as well as new essays (Patrick Kane, Anneka Lenssen).
The publication is edited with the collaboration of Centre Pompidou's research library, Bibliotheque Kandinsky, where Ramses Younan's archives are now preserved.
Ramses Younan (1913-1966) was an Egyptian painter, intellectual, writer and translator, born in Minieh (Egypt). He is one of the pioneers of modern painting in the Middle East and Africa, having introduced successively surrealism and abstraction.
