Yves Scherer - Sirens
Yves Scherer's Tatami mats series.
The book features a series of pictorial and multi-material interventions on Japanese Tatami beds by Yves Scherer. In this series, the artist incorporates common found objects and mixed media such as paint, textiles, souvenirs from his travels, straw, and articles that together speak of his own experiences and memories. Rather known for his research based on the appropriation of portraits of figures from the pop culture, the artist presents a more intimate, subtle production which combines low and high culture, with references to the history of art and mainstream media.
Yves Scherer (born 1987 in Solothurn, Switzerland) is a Swiss contemporary artist living and working in New York. Experimenting with different mediums and forms, Scherer discusses themes ranging from gender identity, personal life experiences and emotions to Hollywood culture, public media, and spectacle. The artist questions the boundaries of privacy while exploring the tensions between reality and virtuality, particularly during this digital age of instantaneity. His use of everyday materials, both from nature and popular culture, evoke a form of contemporary Arte Povera. In contrast to his previous artwork produced through digitalized processes, Scherer presently engages with simple and unprocessed materials.
Yves Scherer holds an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art London. His work has been presented at international institutions such as ICA London, Kunsthalle Basel, Swiss Institute NY, Kunstverein Wiesen, Kunsthaus Grenchen and Basement Roma. He has had solo shows at Guido Baudach, Berlin (2019, 2016, 2014); Cassina Projects, NY (2018); Golsa Gallery, Oslo (2020, 2018); José Garcia, Mexico City (2015) amongst others. He received the Swiss Art Award (2015).
