Michael Sailstorfer

Born in 1979 in Vilsbiburg (Germany), Michael Sailstorfer lives in Munich and London. Characterized by subversive poetry and melancholic humor, his oeuvre can be read against the backdrop of the conceptualization of space. His sculptures endure as memories instead of as materials: the spinning tire in Time is no highway—Berlin, 2006, expands by giving off an utterly unpleasant odour of burning rubber. In Untitled (Lohma), 2008—a looped, slowed-down film of a hangar exploding—the house seems to be breathing like a human soul, while the bang of the explosion becomes a sound with volume and movement, visibly stretching the hangar.
