Catalogue documenting an eponymous exhibition of neon sculptures by artist Warren Neidich. These installations aim to examine the rise of cognitive capitalism in the 21st century while affirming art as a political weapon against it.
Accompanying the two major neon sculptural installations from that exhibition, The Statisticon Neon and Pizzagate, this catalogue is an analysis of the emerging political conditions of late-stage cognitive capitalism, conditions in which the brain and mind exist as the factories of the 21st century. Of particular interest in this analysis is the brain's neural plasticity, and the role of new technologies in harnessing its potential. Also crucial is the role of art in creating new, distinctive methods, atmospheres, and intensities with which to thwart new methodologies of subsumption.
Published following the eponymous exhibition at the Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz e.V., Berlin, from April 28 to August 19, 2017.
Warren Neidich is a post-conceptual artist, writer and theorist. He is currently Professor of Art at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin and founding director of the Saas Fee Summer Institute of Art. Conceptual Art today is not about immaterial objects but immaterial labor operating in the knowledge economy but also engaging the process of the brain. His work combines photography, video, painting, Internet downloads, and scotch tape and noise installations operating in social spaces and preempting future realities.
