The work of Austrian artist Christoph Meier examines space as a site of social interaction and interrogates the conditions of contemporary art production and presentation. This exhibition catalogue provides multiple entry points to his practice, with three in-depth articles by Vanessa Joan Müller, Anna Nowak, and Thomas D. Trummer, and an interview with the artist.
Christoph Meier combines abstract and architectural concepts of the gallery space with a social structure revolving around the narrative and performative potentials of the media involved. Meier’s space is thus also a site of social interaction. His audience becomes part of a real, space-filling, architectural structure. The publication Christoph Meier – C & O is a result of the collaboration between three different institutions who all have shown and will present solo exhibitions by Christoph Meier until 2018.
This exhibition catalogue aims to illuminate the many different aspects, detours and vantage points in Meier's practice, examined in three in-depth articles by Vanessa Joan Müller, Anna Nowak, and Thomas D. Trummer.
Published on the occasion of the eponymous touring exhibition at the Kunstverein in Hamburg in 2016, at KIOSK, Ghent, in 2017, and at Casino Luxembourg in 2018.
The works of Christoph Meier (born 1980 in Austria, lives and works in Vienna) focus on the performative and narrative possibilities of media and presentation formats as such. Besides themes like mutability, imitation and recognition, his approach therefore highlights the artist's act of going public and the audience's acts of ascribing meaning. Also, the gap between the original, its copy and further copies corresponds to the creative scope that Meier's objects mark out. Recent solo exhibitions include Secession (AT), Kunsthaus Graz (AT), MUSA Museum auf Abruf (AT), Fonderia Battaglia (IT), The Program at Hochschule für Bildende Kunst (DE) and KIOSK (BE). Meier's work was included in group exhibitions held, between other venues, at Austrian Cultural Forum (USA), Kunstverein in Hamburg (DE), Galleria Collicaligreggi (IT), Kunstraum St.Virgil (AT), Cité internationale des arts (FR), 21er-Haus (AT) and Frac Auvergne (FR).
