The Deposition of Richard PrinceIn The Case of Cariou v. Prince et al

Richard Prince - The Deposition of Richard Prince
The transcript of the under-oath deposition of Richard Prince, sued for copyright violation.
Edited by American artist and blogger Greg Allen, The Deposition of Richard Prince is about the copyright infringement case, where French photographer Patrick Cariou sues Richard Prince for unauthorized use of his photographic material. The book consists of the transcript of Prince's deposition. It's a almost seven hour long Q. & A. between Patrick Cariou's attorney and Richard Prince. He has to defend and explain his way of working and talk about his career, life, motivation, etc. Everything under oath. As R.P. hardly gives interviews an if he not seldom makes things up, this is quiet an exceptional / extended piece of conversation under very special circumstances.
American artist Richard Prince (born 1949 in Panama Canal Zone, lives and works in New York) recycles found materials from American popular culture, most often images from advertisement and magazine photography which he re-photographs, silkscreens, overpaints, frames, enlarges, or arranges in collages, playing with their somehow empty meaning. Citation, détournement, appropriation: any possible treatment of these clichés is explored and played with.
